| review: | ** spoiler alert ** "Seven is not just a number--it's a gift. It can lift your spirit and help you see the world in new ways." This is a quote in Jacqueline Leo's book"Seven." Throughout my life I've had friends who have chosen the number seven as their lucky number. I had no idea enough material existed in libraries, true anecdotes from the lives of ordinary people and famous people to attribute a "mystical" explanation to "seven." "Seven" by Jacqueline Leo is a book of wonder. I had no idea people find it easier to focus on a list of seven than any other number. Before reading the book I was able to only think of the Seven Wonders of the World, and the Seven Deadly sins. This book made me drag down the spider webs in my brain. The webs had hidden my imagination. I had been taught to avoid superstitions. If you do this, then, this will happen. Older people called it "a bunch of tomfoolery or just plain foolishness. In other words, stop letting your mind run away with you. When I relaxed, I began to think, giggle and say wow like an excited child who has just seen their first rainbow. By the way, the color spectrum is made up of seven: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. I began to learn more about our universe, ways to make learning easier for our children learn and a lot of information about relationships. I loved the illustrations in the book. These drawings are done by Jacqueline Leo's daughter, Karen. She is a wonderful artist. Those drawings made all the facts seem magical. I would like to say a special thanks to Jacqueline Leo's daughter. Every time I try to stop writing I remember another wonderful fact from "Seven." I truly enjoyed the facts about nature. For example, the awful smell a skunk gives off at certain times is made up of seven elements. I thought that fact was really awesome. Also, There is a Star flower which has seven petals and seven leaves. The Creation story in the Bible includes seven days of creation. When I look at the Big Dipper in the sky, I will always remember seven stars make the design. I do have to slide off my magical carousel to admit one small thing. Some facts are hard to understand unless you are good at Science and Mathematics. Those few times when I frowned and said, "What???" were few. Really, Jacqueline Leo is very good at writing a book for the average person walking down the street. Yes, there are seven candles in the Menorah. In Islam, the Prophet Muhammad ascended or passed through seven heavens. By the way, I use to love Seven Up, the soda. Seven, seven, seven, seven, seven, seven, seven, I feel like it's taking over my life. I'm just wondering. How many tentacles does an octopus have? I'll betcha there are seven of those spooky, slippery tentacles. Who would like to guess? |
