The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey by Walter Mosley

If I had the chance to ask Walter Mosley a question, I would ask this one. As a younger author would you have written about Ptolemy Grey? Ptolemy Grey is a ninety-one year old man who has allowed life to strengthen him and not make him weaker. Mr. Grey has a big heart. He loves his family, and he loves his friends. Ptolemy Grey is true blue. I enjoyed learning about his life and walking with him at a slower pace through his last days. I never knew what would pop out of his mouth. For example, he lives with a much younger girl named Robyn. Robyn is a sweetheart. She loves Ptolemy like a father or another relative. He loves her like a daughter. One day Ptolemy says, "If I was fifty years younger and you was twenty years older...I'd marry you and make your children and we'd move to Mississippi and grow peaches and corn."

Robyn and Ptolemy Grey complete one another physically and spiritually. Without Robyn, Ptolemy Grey's life might have been shortened. Without Ptolemy Grey, Robyn's life would have been meaningless and dark. It is amazing how these two people healed one another emotionally.  Although he is very old most of the time Ptolemy Grey's mind is clear especially after medical help from the devil. Ptolemy Grey is able to see beneath the surface of life. "I was a chore that he did every couple'a days. That's what old people turn into, chores for the young."

Ptolemy Grey lived a long, good life. As far as health, he suffered. As he would say his mind fell in on itself like an old barn. He also suffered pain too. Still, he never gave up. He kept walking and caring for other people. Then, at the end he remembered the past more than any tomorrows. Walter Mosley has shaped an old man's life. I think he accomplished quite a feat. In this novel there are no rocking chairs. There is only an elderly man who lived up to his name. He lived like a warrior, a conqueror. He carried the royal name Ptolemy Grey well. Rest peacefully, Mr. Ptolemy Grey. Walter Mosley

The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey by Walter Mosley

"Our souls , when we got 'em, is so beautiful that angels always lookin' to take 'em. That's why when the Devil comes up on you you got to hold tight on the love in your heart."
