The (Kiss) by Sara Teasdale (T)

T)
The Kiss

I hoped that he would love me,
   And he has kissed my mouth,
But I am like a stricken bird
   That cannot reach the south.

For though I know he loves me,
   Tonight my heart is sad;
His kiss was not so wonderful
   As all the dreams I had.

Poor guys, little do they know that they are competing with our dreams.

Sula (S) by Toni Morrison

S)
Whenever I lose my bearings, I head back for a Toni Morrison novel. Her books make me stronger. This time I chose SULA. I don't remember reading this one. I haven't always written down every book I've read. When I began reading as a child, the number of books didn't matter. What mattered was that the book could transport me to other worlds and to meet other people. So, I haven't accounted for every book read in my life. The number really isn't important to me. I'm not in a contest to read the most books. I just read books because they make me feel alive.

Sula is making me feel more than alive. Eva is the mother. She is a strong woman. One day Hannah, her daughter, asked "do you love us, mama?" Remember Papa asked his wife that question in Fiddler on the Roof? "Do you love me?" His wife answers "of course, I love you. I cook your clothes. I bared your children, etc. You ask, do I love you?" These are the same types of answers Eva gives Hannah in Sula.
