Clarye is a young woman who lives in Memphis, Tennessee. Each day brings with it a challenge she will face for the rest of her life. Clarye has Polio. Clarye doesn't allow Polio to stop her life.Clarye marries more than once in her life. Also, she is the mother of two children and a grandson. It's ironic her struggle isn't with Polio. Her struggle is with the men she meets and chooses to marry. Each man except for Gavin brings pain in her life. These men bring not only emotional pain in her life but also physical abuse. I cringed when one of the men she married called her "a cripple." The physical abuse is so awful it took my breath away.
AUTHOR SHELIA LIPSEY's empathy helped me to stay grounded. The whole time I read the novel my mind thought of women who are really living through violent experiences. I did find it hard to believe that none of the men who entered Clarye's life rejected her because of the Polio. I think having one man walk away because of the Polio would have made the novel even more grounded in reality.
I think women want to share their love so badly. It's easy for women to hang on to the belief that something will happen differently in the next relationship. After all, it's hard to believe that every man walking the earth is so cruel, and of course, it's not true. Many men with fine spiritual values are all around the world and in our very communities. While going through her trials, Clarye keeps her focus on her Christian beliefs. When she almost gives in and thinks about why and how a Good God would let horrible situations happen, her friend helps her recall G
OD'S control over every situation and HIS
ETERNAL GOODNESS.
